Guide: how to find out what breed your dog is

What this tool does

What breed is my dog? analyzes a photo of your dog and shows the breeds it most resembles, with a percentage for each. It works right on your phone or computer: the photo is processed on your device and not uploaded to any server.

How it works

Upload a photo or take one with the camera. The tool uses an artificial intelligence model trained to recognize more than a hundred breeds from images. The model downloads the first time you use it, so it may take a few seconds on slow connections.

For best results, use a sharp, well-lit photo that clearly shows your dog's face and body, with no other people or animals in the picture. Try several photos and compare.

What the result means

The percentage shows how much your dog looks like the photos of each breed the model knows. It isn't a genetic test. If your dog is a mix, you'll see several breeds with similar percentages, which usually reflects traits like ear size, coat type or head shape.

If you want to know the breed mix for sure, there are dog DNA tests done with a saliva sample. Even so, keep in mind that appearance doesn't always match genetics.

Why knowing its likely breed helps

Knowing which breeds your dog has helps you anticipate some things, although every dog is unique:

  • Energy and exercise: a mix with lots of herding breed probably needs more activity. Work out its exercise with the walk planner.
  • Adult size and feeding: useful for its portion with the daily food tool and its human age.
  • Health: some breeds are prone to certain problems, like hip dysplasia, breathing trouble in flat-faced breeds or eye diseases. Mention it to your vet.

Remember that mixed-breed dogs are often healthy, smart and wonderful, whatever their mix.

How to take the ideal photo

Find a spot with natural light and ask someone to get your dog's attention so it looks at the camera. Take one photo from the front showing the head clearly and another from the side, full body. Avoid costumes, harsh shadows and photos from far away. With young puppies the result may change as they grow, so try again in a few months. Share the result with friends and see if they guessed right.

Frequently asked questions

Why do different photos give different results?

Light, angle and posture change what the model sees. Use several photos and look for the breeds that repeat.

Does it work for cats?

No, it's trained only on dog breeds.

Is my photo saved online?

No. It's analyzed on your device.

Why is it slow the first time?

Because it downloads the recognition model. After that it's faster.
