Guide: how much exercise your dog needs

What this tool does

The walk planner calculates how much daily exercise your dog needs based on its breed, size and age. It also lets you log each walk, set weekly goals and follow a virtual journey: the miles you walk together move you along a route on a map, which makes it more motivating.

How it works

Choose the breed or type of dog and its age. The tool suggests minutes of activity per day and how to split them. Then log your walks and see whether you're meeting the goal, with a weekly summary.

How much exercise each dog needs

  • Very active breeds (border collie, Belgian shepherd, husky, young Labrador): one to two hours a day or more, with games and mental work.
  • Medium-energy breeds (beagle, cocker spaniel, medium mixes): 45 to 90 minutes a day.
  • Calm or small breeds (bulldog, shih tzu, pug): 30 to 60 minutes, in short outings and never in the heat.
  • Puppies: short, frequent walks. Avoid long runs or repeated jumping while they grow.
  • Senior dogs: staying active is good for their joints, but adapt pace and length.

A good walk is more than walking

Sniffing is a need for dogs. Letting it sniff tires it mentally and lowers stress, so a relaxed walk with time to sniff is worth as much as a fast one. Mix different activities: walks, fetch, short obedience exercises and nose games at home.

Watch the weather. In summer, if the pavement burns your hand in five seconds, it burns its paws too. Walk early or at dusk and bring water. In winter, wash its paws when you get home if the streets are salted.

A dog with the right amount of exercise is usually calmer at home and keeps a healthier weight. Check it with the ideal weight tool. If you have a puppy, combine walks with puppy school.

What to bring on every walk

Always bring a leash, poop bags, water if it's hot and a few treats to reward good behavior. Check that the collar or harness fits well and that its tag has your phone number. If you walk at night, use a reflective collar or a light so drivers can see you both.

Frequently asked questions

Is the backyard enough?

Not entirely. A yard doesn't replace walks, which provide new stimulation and socialization.

How many walks a day?

Ideally at least two or three outings, even if some are short.

How do I know it's too tired?

If it pants heavily, lags behind, limps or lies down, stop and rest in the shade.

Can I go running with my dog?

Yes, if it's an adult, healthy and a suitable breed. Build up slowly and check with your vet.
