Guide: signs your pet is happy and loves you

What this quiz does

Is it happy? Does it love me? is a fun quiz that asks about your dog, cat or bird's daily behavior and gives a happiness and affection score, with a certificate you can save and share. It's a game, but the questions are based on real signs of wellbeing, so it also helps you notice important details.

How it works

Choose the species and answer questions like whether it greets you when you get home, how it sleeps, whether it plays, how it eats or whether it seeks your company. At the end the tool adds up the answers, shows the result and gives you ideas to improve your pet's daily life.

Signs of a happy pet

  • Dogs: relaxed body, tail in a natural position, eager to play, good appetite, peaceful sleep and seeks you out. Leaning on you or bringing you a toy are ways of asking for attention.
  • Cats: greets you with a raised tail, purrs near you, kneads, rubs against your legs, gives slow blinks and sleeps in exposed positions, like belly up. Read more in Why does my cat knead?
  • Birds: sings or talks, plays with toys, preens calmly, eats well and seeks your interaction. Beak grinding at bedtime is a good sign.

Signs something isn't right

Changes in behavior are the most important clue. Pay attention if your pet hides more than usual, stops eating, sleeps much more, loses interest in play, licks itself or plucks feathers nonstop, or becomes irritable. These can be signs of pain, illness or stress, and it's worth seeing the vet.

To boost its wellbeing, make sure it gets enough exercise with the walk planner, learn to read its body with What is my pet telling me? and follow the daily tip to add small improvements to its routine.

Small things that add up

A pet's happiness is built from daily details: greeting it when you arrive, keeping regular mealtimes, giving it a few minutes of play even when you're tired and leaving it a quiet place to rest. For birds, talking to them often and letting them out of the cage safely makes a big difference to their mood.
