Guide: on-screen game for cats

What this tool does

The cat game turns your phone or tablet into a toy. Mice, fish and a laser dot move across the screen like real prey so your cat can chase them with its paw. Just set the device on the floor and let it play.

How it works

Choose the prey and the speed. The shapes move unpredictably, hide and reappear, as a small animal would. When your cat taps one, the screen reacts. It works best full screen, with the brightness up and the device flat on the floor.

Why cats need to play

Cats are hunters. Even when well fed, they need to stalk, chase and catch. Without a way to do that they can get bored, gain weight or burn off energy with annoying behaviors, like ambushing ankles or waking you before dawn.

Two or more play sessions a day of about 10 to 15 minutes are recommended. The ideal cycle mimics hunting: search, chase, catch and, at the end, eat. That's why it's a good idea to give a treat or its meal right after playing.

Tips for screen play

  • Protect the screen: use a screen protector or case, and make sure it doesn't scratch too hard.
  • Mix in real toys: on a screen it never actually catches anything, which can frustrate some cats. End each session with a toy it can bite or a treat.
  • Be careful with the laser: the laser dot is very appealing but can never be caught. Use it sparingly and always finish with real prey.
  • Follow its interest: if it gets bored or walks away, end the game.

If your cat is very active at night or overweight, daily play helps a lot. Check its weight with the ideal weight tool and read about its behavior in Why does my cat knead?

Other ways to entertain your cat

Besides the screen game, you can hide treats in cardboard boxes, use a puzzle feeder, put a shelf by a window so it can watch birds or use a feather wand. Move toys around every few days so they feel new. An entertained cat sleeps better at night and is usually calmer. Kittens and young cats usually need the most play, so plan extra sessions for them.

Frequently asked questions

Can it break the screen?

It's rare, but claws can scratch it. A screen protector prevents that.

Can cats see screens well?

Yes. They detect movement very well, though they see colors differently than we do.

Is it good for older cats?

Yes. Choose a slow speed and short sessions.

Is it good for dogs?

It's designed for cats, but some curious dogs enjoy it too with supervision.
