Guide: how to work out your pet's age in human years

What this calculator does

The human age calculator converts your dog, cat or bird's real age into an equivalent age in human years. That helps you understand what stage of life it's in: a puppy full of energy, an adult in its prime, or a senior that needs extra care.

It's useful for practical decisions, like when to switch to a senior food, how often to schedule checkups or what kind of exercise suits it best.

How it works

Pick the species and, for dogs, the size: small, medium, large or giant. Then enter its age in years and months. The tool applies a different formula for each case and shows its human age and life stage.

Size matters a lot in dogs. A 10-year-old Chihuahua and a 10-year-old Great Dane are not the same biological age: large and giant dogs age faster and usually live shorter lives than small ones.

Why it isn't just times seven

The "one dog year equals seven human years" rule is a myth. Dogs and cats mature very quickly at first: by their first birthday they're like a teenager or young adult, and at two they're roughly 24 in human years. After that they age more slowly, around four to seven human years per year depending on size.

Cats follow a pattern similar to small dogs: the first year equals about 15 human years, the second about 24, and then roughly four per year. A 12-year-old cat is already a senior of about 64 in human years.

For birds, it all depends on the species. A budgie lives 5 to 10 years, a cockatoo can pass 40 and some large parrots live over 50. That's why the tool uses each bird type's life expectancy to estimate its stage.

What to do with the result

  • Puppy or young: complete vaccines, socialization and training. See puppy school.
  • Adult: yearly checkup, a healthy weight and plenty of exercise. Use the ideal weight tool.
  • Senior: checkups every six months, adapted food and attention to changes in how it walks, drinks or urinates.

Frequently asked questions

At what age is a dog considered senior?

It depends on size. Giant dogs may be seniors from about 6, while small dogs usually reach that stage around 9 or 10.

And a cat?

Generally from 10 or 11, although many cats live healthy lives to 15 or beyond.

Is the result exact?

No. It's an estimate based on averages. Genetics, diet and care mean every pet ages at its own pace.

Does it work for mixed-breed dogs?

Yes. Choose the size it will be as an adult, or the one closest to its current weight if it's already grown.
